APPLYING PRACTICAL REASONING TO SOLVE THE FUTURE OF FOOD

Marybeth Motasem, Family & Consumer Sciences Educator, Bexley, Ohio Schools

Marybeth Motasem has spent the past 17 years teaching Family and Consumer Sciences in both suburban and rural school districts in Ohio.  Marybeth has taught every subject taught under the umbrella of Family and Consumer Sciences, but for the past seven years has focused in on the subjects of personal finance, nutrition, and food science.  Marybeth strongly believes in creating connections between the foods we eat, and the food we grow.  She has embedded this belief in her classroom practices and in the 8 raised-bed garden she oversees along with her Garden Club students.  It is not uncommon to walk into Marybeth’s classroom on any given day and see students problem solving solutions to some of our world’s issues like how to reduce food waste, using resources more efficiently, and shifting our diets to more sustainable food sources.  When Marybeth is not at school, she enjoys spending time with her family watching soccer, going on nature hikes, and doing lots of cooking.
